Overview: Bronze Plugs and Bronze Pipe Plugs
Brass & Copper Parts manufactures precision-machined Bronze Plugs and Bronze Pipe Plugs from its ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Jamnagar, India. Bronze pipe plugs are threaded closure fittings used to seal unused ports, tapped holes, and pipe branch connections in piping systems, valve bodies, pump casings, hydraulic manifolds, and pressure equipment. Our bronze plugs are produced from LG2 gunmetal (BS 1400 LG2 / ASTM B62, C83600) and tin bronze alloys in NPT (ASME B1.20.1), BSP (ISO 7/1), and metric thread forms, covering 1/8″ through 4″ NPT and BSP, and M10 through M64 metric. We supply OEM buyers, marine equipment manufacturers, pump and valve OEMs, and industrial MRO distributors across the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East with both cast and machined bronze pipe plugs in hex, square, round, and flush plug configurations.
What Are Bronze Pipe Plugs?
A bronze pipe plug is a threaded fitting with a solid body used to close off a pipe end, unused valve port, instrument connection, or test point. Bronze (gunmetal LG2 or tin bronze) is the preferred material for pipe plugs in marine, potable water, steam, oil, gas, and chemical service because of its excellent corrosion resistance in freshwater, seawater, steam, and mild acid environments; its non-sparking nature; and its compatibility with bronze valve bodies into which it is installed. LG2 gunmetal provides inherent dezincification resistance in potable water and seawater service without the need for separate DZR treatment.
Key Features of Bronze Pipe Plugs
- Dezincification Resistant by Nature: LG2 gunmetal (C83600 / CuSn5Zn5Pb5) and tin bronze alloys contain low zinc and are inherently dezincification-resistant, meeting WRAS requirements for potable water contact.
- Marine and Seawater Grade: LG2 gunmetal is Lloyds Register and DNV GL approved for marine piping systems; suitable for continuous seawater immersion, steam, and high-salinity environments.
- Broad Thread Standards: NPT (ASME B1.20.1), BSP parallel (ISO 228), BSP taper (ISO 7/1 / EN 10226), and metric plug threads all available from the same facility.
- High Pressure Rating: Class 150 (300 PSI WOG) and Class 300 rated plugs available; steam service rated to 150 PSI SWP (saturated steam).
- Multiple Head Styles: Square head, hex head, round slotted, and flush plug (Allen key drive) configurations available in all thread types.
- Temperature Range: LG2 gunmetal suitable from -196°C (cryogenic) to +260°C (steam); superior to brass plugs in elevated temperature service.
- Pressure-Tight Taper Thread Seal: NPT and BSP taper threaded plugs achieve pressure-tight seals with PTFE tape or anaerobic thread sealant without requiring separate gaskets.

Product Types and Variants
Bronze Square Head Pipe Plugs (NPT and BSP)
Bronze square head pipe plugs are the most common configuration for general industrial, marine, and HVAC piping. The square head allows positive engagement with a standard pipe wrench for high-torque installation and removal. Available in 1/8″ to 4″ NPT and BSP taper, manufactured from LG2 gunmetal (ASTM B62 / BS 1400 LG2) by sand casting for sizes above 3/4″, and machined from bar stock for smaller sizes. All threads are gauged with Go/No-Go gauges per ASME B1.20.1 or ISO 7/1. Pressure rating Class 150 (300 PSI WOG) standard; Class 300 available on request.
Bronze Hex Head Pipe Plugs
Hex head bronze pipe plugs allow installation with a standard open-end or box spanner rather than a pipe wrench, making them preferred in confined spaces and panel-mounted applications. The hex head profile follows DIN 906 (metric plug) or ASME B16.14 equivalent dimensional standards. Available in 1/8″ to 2″ NPT and BSP taper; LG2 gunmetal construction standard. Tin bronze C90300 is available for higher-strength or elevated temperature requirements. These plugs are widely used as instrument port closures, test point seals, and drain plugs in machinery, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels.
Bronze Flush (Countersunk / Allen Key) Pipe Plugs
Flush plugs have no projecting head—they are installed flush with or below the pipe or manifold face using an internal hex (Allen key), square, or slotted drive. This configuration is preferred where projecting plug heads would create a trip hazard, interfere with mating flanges, or obstruct mechanical assemblies. Available in 1/8″ to 2″ NPT and BSP; internal hex drive (Allen key) is most common. Manufactured from LG2 gunmetal bar stock by CNC turning. Used extensively in hydraulic manifold blocks, cylinder heads, and heat exchanger end plates where a flush surface is required.
Bronze Round Head Slotted Pipe Plugs
Round head slotted bronze plugs are used for light-duty port closures, oil drain holes, and small vent port seals in machinery and marine equipment. The slotted or cross-recessed head is driven with a flat-blade screwdriver, limiting maximum installation torque and making these plugs suitable for frequently accessed ports. Available in 1/8″ to 1/2″ NPT and BSP, manufactured from LG2 gunmetal bar stock by CNC turning or screw machine. Used widely in small marine engine oil drain ports, gearbox vent fittings, and pneumatic manifold bleeder ports.
Bronze Welding Boss Plugs and Flanged Pipe Plugs
Welding boss plugs with socket weld or butt weld ends and threaded ports are produced from LG2 gunmetal castings or bar stock. These fittings allow a threaded instrument or service connection to be welded into a copper alloy pressure vessel, providing future access without full port weld-out. Flanged plug variants are machined to match ASME B16.5 Class 150/300 or BS EN 1092-3 copper alloy flange face dimensions. WPS/PQR support documentation is available for critical pressure equipment applications requiring weld qualification records.
Bronze Hydraulic Port Plugs (SAE, Metric ORB)
Hydraulic system port plugs in bronze with O-ring boss (ORB) sealing per SAE J514 or bonded seal (Dowty seal) seats per ISO 6149 are produced for pneumatic and hydraulic manifold closure in mobile equipment, industrial presses, and offshore hydraulic control systems. The O-ring groove dimensions and thread pitch comply with SAE J514 and ISO 6149-1. Metric hydraulic plugs in sizes M12×1.5 through M33×2 are produced from LG2 or C90300 bar stock by CNC turning, with O-ring seating faces ground to Ra 0.8 µm for reliable O-ring compression.

Manufacturing Process
Step 1 – Material and Alloy Verification: LG2 gunmetal ingot or bar from certified foundries/mills is XRF-verified for Cu, Sn, Zn, Pb content. EN 10204 3.1 MTCs accompany every heat.
Step 2 – Sand Casting or Bar Preparation: Plugs 3/4″ to 4″ are sand-cast or die-cast in LG2 moulds; casting porosity, inclusions, and cold shuts are verified by visual and dimensional inspection. Smaller sizes (1/8″–1/2″) are machined directly from LG2 hexagonal bar stock.
Step 3 – CNC Turning and Head Machining: Cast blanks and bar stock are CNC-turned to produce accurate head dimensions, body diameter, and seating features. Square or hex head AF dimensions are held to ±0.1 mm.
Step 4 – Thread Cutting and Taper Gauging: NPT, BSPt, BSPP, and metric threads are single-point cut or tapped. Taper thread standoff is gauged against ASME or ISO taper gauge rings. Go/No-Go parallel gauges verify BSPP and metric threads.
Step 5 – Deburring and Pressure Testing: All thread entries and head drive recesses are deburred. Sample hydrostatic pressure testing at 1.5× WOG pressure is performed per batch. Vacuum leak testing is available.
Step 6 – Cleaning and Optional Surface Finish: Ultrasonic alkaline cleaning, followed by lacquering (for corrosion protection during storage/transit) or natural bronze finish. Tin plating is available for splash-zone applications.
Step 7 – Marking and Packing: Head stamping with thread type, size, and material grade where specified. Packing in polythene bags or fibre drums by size with full export documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between NPT and BSP bronze pipe plugs?
NPT (National Pipe Taper) per ASME B1.20.1 is the US standard with a 60° thread angle and 1:16 taper, sealing on the thread flanks. BSP Taper (BSPt / Rc) per ISO 7/1 uses a 55° Whitworth thread form with the same 1:16 taper. BSP Parallel (BSPP / G) per ISO 228 is non-sealing on the thread and requires a face seal. NPT and BSP plugs are NOT interchangeable; using the wrong plug risks cross-threading or inadequate sealing pressure.
What is LG2 gunmetal and is it the same as bronze?
LG2 (Leaded Gunmetal, Grade 2) is a specific copper-tin-zinc-lead alloy (CuSn5Zn5Pb5) classified as a bronze under BS 1400 and equivalent to ASTM C83600. “Gunmetal” is the traditional British term for this alloy family. It is broadly referred to as “bronze” in the piping industry and is preferred over standard brass for dezincification resistance and higher corrosion resistance in marine, steam, and potable water applications.
Are your bronze pipe plugs rated for steam service?
Yes. LG2 gunmetal bronze pipe plugs in NPT or BSPt thread configurations are suitable for saturated steam service to 150 PSI (10.3 bar) per ASME B16.14 and BS 21. For superheated steam above 150 PSI, carbon steel plugs are typically required.
What sealant should be used with bronze NPT pipe plugs?
PTFE tape per ASTM D5407 is the most common sealant for NPT and BSPt bronze plugs in water, oil, gas, and air service. Anaerobic thread sealants (e.g., Loctite 577) are preferred for permanent or vibration-prone installations. Hemp-and-jointing compound (WRAS-approved) is traditional for BSPt in water service.
Can you supply bronze plugs with Lloyds Register certification?
Yes. Lloyds Register (LR) and DNV GL type approval and production witnessing of LG2 gunmetal pipe plugs can be arranged for naval and offshore classification society orders. Third-party inspector costs are additional.
What is the maximum pressure rating for bronze pipe plugs?
Standard Class 150: 300 PSI WOG at ambient temperature; 150 PSI SWP (steam). Class 300: 750 PSI WOG. Actual ratings depend on plug size, wall thickness, and thread engagement length.
Do you supply bronze pipe plugs in both cast and machined forms?
Yes. Sizes 1/8″ to 3/4″ are produced by CNC turning from LG2 bar stock for higher accuracy. Sizes 3/4″ to 4″ are supplied sand-cast and finish-machined. For critical pressure applications, all sizes are available as fully machined from bar or forging.
What is the minimum order quantity for bronze pipe plugs?
Standard catalogue sizes: 100 pieces minimum per size/thread type. Custom thread forms: 500 pieces minimum. Mixed-size orders: 500 pieces total minimum.
Can you supply bronze pipe plugs with country of origin markings?
Yes. Head stamping or embossing with thread type, size, material grade, and “MADE IN INDIA” is available. Custom markings to OEM specification are accommodated at modest additional cost.
Are bronze pipe plugs compatible with copper and bronze valves?
Yes. LG2 gunmetal bronze plugs are galvanically compatible with copper, bronze, gunmetal, brass, and Monel piping and valve materials, preventing galvanic corrosion at the plug-body interface that would occur with iron or steel plugs in non-ferrous piping systems.
