Copper Cup Washers

We are manufacturers, suppliers, and exporters of Copper Cup Washers from our precision press shop in India. Copper cup washers are deep-drawn pressed components used as finishing washers under the heads of countersunk screws and fixings in wooden, composite, and soft material assemblies. Also known as copper finishing washers, copper screw cups, copper decorative washers, copper countersunk finishing washers, copper penny cups, and copper dome washers, these components provide both a functional load-distribution role and an attractive, distinctive copper-coloured finish that is highly valued in specialist joinery, artistic metalwork, architectural hardware, and boat building.
Copper cup washers have a distinct advantage over brass cup washers in applications where copper’s superior corrosion resistance, unique aesthetic, and warm reddish-gold colour are specifically desired. In marine and outdoor applications, copper naturally develops a patina (verdigris) over time that is corrosion-protective and is aesthetically valued in heritage, traditional, and artisan construction. Copper cup washers are widely specified by boatbuilders, furniture designers, instrument makers, and architectural craftspeople who want a distinctive, high-quality finish on visible fastenings.
Types of Copper Cup Washers We Manufacture
Standard Copper Screw Cup Washers: Classic deep-drawn cup washers in polished copper for use with countersunk screws No. 4 to No. 14 (imperial) and M3 to M8 (metric). The cup profile accepts the conical underside of the countersunk head and presents a smooth copper surface to view.
Raised (Deep) Copper Cup Washers: Deeper cup profile for use with longer countersunk screws in thicker wood assemblies. The deeper cup provides a more prominent, decorative appearance and accommodates screws with taller heads.
Flat-Rim Copper Cup Washers: Cup washers with a flat outer rim rather than a rounded edge, for applications requiring a flush bearing face on the substrate surface. Used in deck planking and flooring applications.
Large Diameter Copper Cup Washers: Oversized outer diameter cup washers for use in softwood, MDF, and composite materials where the standard size would pull through. The large bearing face distributes the load over a greater area.
Polished Mirror Copper Cup Washers: Highly polished to a mirror finish for premium decorative metalwork, musical instrument assembly (stringed instruments, accordions), and high-end furniture.
Patinated Copper Cup Washers: Pre-patinated to an aged green-brown verdigris or antiqued copper finish for use in heritage restoration, period furniture reproduction, and artistic installations where a naturally aged look is required from new.
Lacquered Copper Cup Washers: Clear lacquer coated to preserve the bright copper finish and prevent the natural tarnishing process. Used in interior applications where a consistently bright copper appearance is required throughout the product’s service life.
Materials and Specifications
Copper cup washers are manufactured from ETP Copper (CW004A / C11000) strip of 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm thickness. Electrolytic Tough Pitch copper provides the combination of high purity (99.9% Cu), excellent formability for the deep-draw press operation, and attractive natural colour that makes it ideal for cup washer manufacture. Strip is sourced to BS EN 1652 and ASTM B152 specifications with full material certification. Standard outer diameter range: 10 mm to 35 mm. Countersink profiles available for 90° (metric standard) and 82° (imperial standard) countersunk screws.
Manufacturing Process
Copper cup washers are produced by deep-draw pressing on high-speed progressive presses, with tooling designed specifically for copper’s forming characteristics (higher ductility and lower spring-back compared to brass). The progressive die blanks the outer disc, draws the cup profile, and pierces the centre hole in a single multi-stage press sequence. Careful control of draw reduction ratio and blank-holder pressure ensures consistent cup geometry without tearing or wall thinning. After pressing, washers are tumble-polished or hand-polished, then lacquered or patinated according to finish specification. Full dimensional and visual inspection is performed on every batch.
Applications
Copper cup washers are used in: traditional wooden boat building (mahogany, teak, iroko, and oak planking and joinery), bespoke furniture manufacture, handmade musical instrument construction (classical guitars, ukuleles, violins, accordions), period property restoration and heritage building work, arts and crafts metalwork, copper architectural hardware (door furniture, lighting, signage), garden structures and outdoor furniture, and specialist industrial applications where copper’s non-sparking properties are required for fastener hardware in explosive atmosphere locations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Copper Cup Washers
What is a copper cup washer and when should I use one instead of brass?
A copper cup washer is a deep-drawn pressed washer with a cup-shaped countersink profile, used under countersunk screws for load distribution and a decorative finish. Copper is chosen instead of brass when the application requires copper’s distinctive warm reddish-gold colour, superior formability, or specific non-sparking properties, or when the joiner is working with other copper hardware and wants a matching finish.
Will copper cup washers tarnish or corrode over time?
Bare copper cup washers will gradually develop a natural patina (oxidation and verdigris) over time when exposed to air and moisture. This patina is actually corrosion-protective and is valued aesthetically in traditional joinery and boat building. If a consistent bright copper finish is required, our lacquered copper cup washers will resist tarnishing for many years in interior applications.
Are copper cup washers suitable for use in saltwater environments?
Yes, copper has excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, which is why it has been used in marine joinery for centuries. Copper cup washers are widely used in traditional wooden boat construction with copper or bronze fasteners. In severe saltwater splash or immersion applications, silicon bronze cup washers (also available from us) offer even higher corrosion resistance.
What screw sizes do your copper cup washers fit?
We manufacture copper cup washers for imperial countersunk screws No. 4 through No. 14 and metric countersunk screws M3 through M8. Custom sizes for larger screws up to M12 or No. 18 can be produced with a minimum order.
Can copper cup washers be used with stainless steel screws?
Yes, copper cup washers are commonly used with stainless steel countersunk screws, particularly in marine applications where the screw needs to be stainless for strength while the visible washer is copper for appearance. In saltwater environments, a thin isolating film of jointing compound between the copper washer and stainless steel screw is recommended to minimise any galvanic couple.
Do you manufacture pre-patinated copper cup washers?
Yes, we can supply copper cup washers with a chemically applied patina in antique copper, verdigris (green), or black oxidised finishes for heritage, artistic, and decorative applications where an aged appearance is required from new.
What is the minimum order for copper cup washers?
For standard sizes in polished copper, minimum order is 200 pieces per size. Lacquered or patinated versions minimum order is 500 pieces. Small sample quantities of 25–50 pieces are available for evaluation and design approval.
Do you export copper cup washers internationally?
Yes, we export copper cup washers globally to boatbuilders, furniture manufacturers, musical instrument makers, and hardware distributors in the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, France, and the Middle East.
